Love-struck Japanese teens are risking their health and sight with a dangerous new craze — where they lick each other's eyeballs.
The bizarre "oculolinctus" fetish sweeping across the country sees young lovers erotically grazing their tongues across their partner's cornea.
Hundreds of videos of the trend have been uploaded to YouTube in recent weeks.
But the fad — also dubbed "worming" — is believed to be responsible for a surge in eye infections — including conjunctivitis, or pink eye — with doctors warning it can also lead to blindness.
"Nothing good can come of this," Dr. David Granet, a San Diego ophthalmologist,
told the Huffing Post.
"There are ridges on the tongue that can cause
a corneal abrasion. And if a person hasn't washed out their mouth, they might put acid from citrus products or spices into the eye."
Besides conjunctivitis, Medical Daily reports it can also pass on the herpes virus.
Dr. Phillip Rizzuto, from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, notes that it could cause blindness as the bacteria found in the mouth can damage eye tissue.
Japanese website Naver Matome uncovered the trend after clips of eyeball licking were uploaded online.
